Shiatsu: A Detailed Approach to Japanese Manual Therapy

Shiatsu (指圧), literally 'finger pressure', is a practice with ancient roots, officially recognized in Japan, which has won over the world with its effectiveness and holistic philosophy.

Foundations

Definition and Origin

Shiatsu consists of applying rhythmic pressure over the entire body with the goal of rebalancing the organism and improving or maintaining health. This manual technique mainly uses the thumbs and palms of the hands, but sometimes also the elbows, knees, and even feet to exert pressure on specific points (tsubos) located along the energy meridians.

Historical Roots

The origins of Shiatsu date back to the introduction of Chinese medicine (Kampo) in Japan between the 7th and 9th centuries, notably the Tui Na technique. Over the centuries, Japanese practitioners developed their own approach, giving rise to the anma massage. The term 'shiatsu' itself was chosen in 1919 by Tenpeki Tamaï, but it is Tokujiro Namikoshi (1905-2000) who is considered the inventor of modern shiatsu, thanks to his foundational experience of healing his mother's rheumatism with finger pressure.

Philosophy & Practice

Fundamental Principles: The Philosophy of Ki

Shiatsu considers the human being in its physical, psychic, and mental entirety. It is based on the concept of the circulation of vital energy (called Qi in Chinese and Ki in Japanese) through energy channels called meridians. According to this philosophy, any imbalance results from a blockage in this energy circulation.

Therapeutic Objectives

To release and regulate vital energy
To prevent dysfunctions related to internal imbalances
To reduce tensions settled in the body
To stimulate the body's natural defenses
To activate the parasympathetic nervous system for recovery and well-being
Methods & Techniques

Techniques and Practice

The practitioner uses various pressure techniques. The most common is ordinary pressure: applied gently to a point then gradually released over 3 to 5 seconds. Modern shiatsu also incorporates stretching, joint mobilization, and vibrations as needed.

Breathing plays a crucial role. The practitioner and receiver synchronize their breaths to facilitate relaxation and fluidity of movement, encouraging a harmonious flow of Ki.
